The Nurse Extern Program at Pine Rest is your opportunity to bridge classroom learning with real-world practice. Over 14 weeks, you’ll gain hands-on experience in psychiatric nursing, strengthen your clinical skills, and build confidence in patient care—all while working alongside experienced nurses who are committed to mentoring you. This program is designed to help you grow as a professional, prepare for your future role as an RN, and make a meaningful impact in mental health care.

Program Details

Our Nurse Extern Program offers a structured, paid experience that prepares you for the transition from student to professional nurse. You’ll work in a collaborative dyad model with a Registered Nurse, caring for diverse patient populations and learning evidence-based practices in a supportive environment.

  • Two weeks of paid first-shift training for onboarding and skills development
  • Twelve weeks of clinical immersion on first or second shift
  • Dedicated RN mentorship and guidance
  • Professional development sessions to strengthen clinical readiness
  • Exposure to interdisciplinary collaboration and psychiatric nursing best practices

Eligibility

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited RN program (BSN or ADN)
  • Commitment to compassionate, culturally inclusive care
  • CPR certification by the end of orientation (Basic Life Support for inpatient programs)

What You’ll Do

As a Nurse Extern, you will:

  • Collaborate with an RN to assess, plan, and provide care
  • Support patients and families through education and discharge planning
  • Maintain a safe environment and document care per policy
  • Work in various clinical settings with diverse populations
  • Role model Pine Rest’s mission and values in every interaction
