Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Activities
Clinical Services
During the course of the 2 year fellowship, a primary focus will be the provision of clinical services. These will include:
Outpatient neuropsychological evaluations.
Fellows will provide services through Pine Rest’s Psychological Consultation Center. Referral questions include: memory/neurocognitive disorders, learning disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders, medical or genetic conditions (e.g. seizure disorders) and their associated cognitive presentations, traumatic brain injuries, and neurodevelopmental differences. Throughout the fellowship, these evaluations will be the majority of the fellows’ clinical work.
Outpatient psychological evaluations.
Fellows will also provide consultations for referrals that include presurgical evaluations, workplace/fitness-for-duty consultation, and general diagnostic evaluations.
Inpatient neuropsychological and psychological evaluations.
Fellows will provide consultation services to psychiatric teams within Pine Rest’s child/adolescent, adult, and older adult psychiatric hospital units. Referral questions may be clearly neuropsychological in nature (e.g., assessment of memory) or related to general diagnostic clarification.
Outpatient psychotherapy.
Fellows will maintain a small caseload of psychotherapy patients. It is expected that a fellow will maintain 3-4 available therapy appointments per week.
Fellows will receive a minimum of one hour per week of individual supervision for the provision of these services.
Didactic Training
Didactic learning activities are designed to prepare fellows to successfully complete all requirements of board certification in clinical neuropsychology (ABPP/ABCN). This includes success with both the written and oral examinations. Didactic learning activities include:
- Weekly lectures. While these will usually be done by faculty neuropsychologists, other psychologists and persons from other disciplines will also provide lectures, as appropriate (e.g. legal standards, psychopharmacology).
- Biweekly neuropsychology case conference with fellowship faculty, fellows and predoctoral interns.
- Monthly neuropsychology journal club with fellowship faculty, fellows and predoctoral interns.
- Readings and completion of AACN learning modules, as collaboratively selected by the fellow and program supervisor.
- Neuropathology and dissection—this will be provided through either a partnering local hospital and pathologist or a neuroanatomical dissection course.
Participation in Supervision
Fellows will receive a minimum of one hour per week of individual supervision regarding their clinical services work (above). This supervision will generally be by the program supervisor and/or one of the faculty neuropsychologists, although other psychologists may provide supervision for certain activities (e.g. psychotherapy). Additionally, fellows will receive supervision of their provision of supervision and teaching activities (below).
Provision of Supervision
During the second year, for six months, fellows will provide weekly individual supervision to predoctoral psychology interns at Pine Rest. For this work, fellows will be supervised by the program supervisor and program director.
Teaching
During the second year, fellows will (each) provide four 1-hour lectures for the predoctoral psychology interns. The first three of these lectures will be focused on neuropsychological competencies appropriate to the internship level, including broad concepts of neuropsychology and training on specific tests and methods. The last of these lectures (in the spring) should be on a neurobehavioral syndrome.
