Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders affect people of all body sizes and shapes.

Dad Hugging Daughter

Anyone can develop an eating disorder, but they are more common in adolescents and young adults. Eating disorders affect people of all weights and body shapes— only 6 percent with an eating disorder are underweight.

About 9% of people in the U.S., or 28.8 million Americans, will have an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

It’s crucial to seek professional support for eating disorders as early as possible, as they can have a serious impact on health and wellbeing. Eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness behind opiate addiction.
