- Why I chose Pine Rest
- I wanted a place that would allow me to care for complex psychiatric patients, give opportunities to train and gain experience in neuromodulation treatments (ECT, TMS, DBS, etc.), all while being respected in a non-threatening, family-friendly environment. This was a tall order, but I found it here at Pine Rest. Here at Pine Rest I have been able to get the best training I can imagine, and still pursue my other interests.
- Professional or Clinical Interests:
- I have particular interests in the intersection of psychiatry and the law, and will be part of Pine Rest’s newest fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry next year. I also have interests in inpatient psychiatric treatment, neuromodulation, teaching, and consultation to medical colleagues.
- Other Interests:
- Biking, playing guitar, volunteering at church, and most importantly, being with my family.

I was also drawn to the campus, which resembles a park more than a stand-alone psychiatric facility while offering the educational opportunities of the latter. Lastly everyone during my interview was warm and welcoming, and it was important to me to choose a program that prioritizes the support and wellbeing of their residents and staff.

- George Mason University, M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction; Liberty University, Ed.S. in Curriculum & Instruction.
- Medical School
- Texas A&M Health Science Center – College of Medicine, College Station, Texas.
- Why I chose Pine Rest
- Its basic philosophy of treating patients as human beings first resonates with how I want to practice medicine. It quickly became apparent that while the faculty at Pine Rest are experts in their field, they are also passionate educators that will help me become a great psychiatrist who is also a caring, compassionate, and ethical physician! Additionally, as an older, non-traditional resident who is married with two children, I appreciate the work-life balance that is clearly evident in this program. Finally, the Grand Rapids area has great schools, many job opportunities for my wife, and a variety of family-friendly activities that will allow my entire family to be happy, while also escaping the horrendously hot Texas summers (yes, I’m prepared for the snow).
- Other Interests
- I thoroughly enjoy nature, camping, backpacking and have completed large sections of the Appalachian Trail, with hopes of one day doing a thru-hike. As a transplant, I’m excited to travel the west coast of Michigan and spend time exploring the UP! I also enjoy watching and playing just about any sport, but thoroughly enjoy running and playing ice hockey which I have played since childhood. If it’s a weekend, you will often find me at a track, ice rink, or soccer field cheering on my kids.

- George Mason University, M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction; Liberty University, Ed.S. in Curriculum & Instruction.

Mark Juel, MD
- Undergraduate
- Calvin College, BFA in Music Performance.
- Medical School
- Wayne State University.
- Why I chose Pine Rest
- Pine Rest seemed to check all the boxes I was looking for in a program; solid academic training, excellent potential to match into a fellowship, good work/life balance, and a great location. I have an interest in Forensic Psychiatry and in recent years Pine Rest has had excellent success in graduates being offered positions at some of the most highly respected programs around the country. Pine Rest is also opening a Forensics Fellowship in the next year which provides more exciting opportunities here in Grand Rapids.
- Other Interests
- Although I’m not from Michigan, I’ve lived in the Mitten State for almost a decade now, and over half of that time has been in Grand Rapids. When I had the opportunity to return to this city I knew I had to jump on it. When I’m not at work or on call I enjoy playing music (string bass), playing indoor soccer year-round in an adult league, and alpine ski racing in the winter time. I’ve also picked up long distance running in recent years and have competed several races around Michigan including the Grand Rapids Marathon, Half Marathon and Riverbank Run 25K. This city is a great place to work and live and has something to offer for just about everybody.

- I really felt like Pine Rest would prepare me best for attending life. I felt that I would get experience on specialized units which many psychiatric hospitals throughout the country do not have. It was an extra plus that it’s close to family, has a history of great camaraderie, and is near the beach.
- Other interests
- I enjoy going out to dinner with friends/ family and spending time playing rec league football and kickball with my co-residents.

- Why I chose Pine Rest
- I chose Pine Rest based on the camaraderie that was exhibited not only between co-residents, but also between residents and attendings, as well as between fellow attendings. I remember on my interview day at lunch I sat with residents, attendings and administration and all shared in conversation and genuinely enjoyed themselves. Now that I am here I can attest to the community that you become a part of when you join the Pine Rest residency, and I have gotten the honor of working with great attendings and other residents who I continuously learn from, but have also made amazing friends. Aside from the sense of community, some of the nicest facilities that I have seen in any hospital or any department made the choice easy as well.
