- Medical School

- Professional/Clinical Interests
- I have yet to decide what area of Psychiatry I am most passionate about, but my academic interests include inpatient psychiatry, ECT, psychedelic psychiatry, and addiction.
- Other Interests/Hobbies
- A great perk of being a resident at Pine Rest is that we have the time to enjoy life outside of work. My hobbies include traveling, live music, karaoke, eating at all the restaurants, and socializing with all the people. I also enjoy setting off the fire alarm while cooking, hiking, audiobooks, and a good horror film marathon.
- Why Pine Rest
- Pine Rest was one of my first residency interviews, and it quickly became the benchmark of what I was looking for in a Psychiatry residency. I knew Pine Rest was the place for me, because as I continued down the interview trail, I found myself comparing all other programs to Pine Rest! Pine Rest is truly a one-of-a-kind integrated mental health campus. You’ll be hard-pressed to find people who are more passionate about patient advocacy and evidence-based practice than the staff at Pine Rest. As a new resident, I feel supported and valued as a member of the team and am so grateful to be learning from some of the best this field has to offer.

- Why Pine Rest
- I chose Pine Rest due to the wide breadth of opportunities that are all on one campus. I left my interview feeling confident that I would have a close-knit residency class, along with a program that continues to push to provide the best educational opportunities for its residents. Grand Rapids is also a great city.

- Medical School

- Interests/Hobbies
- Exploring hiking trails in West Michigan, playing guitar and bass, skiing.
- Why Pine Rest
- I loved the wide variety of training and the compartmentalized units (e.g., Mother and Baby, Young Adult, personality disorders, severely and persistently mentally ill, etc.), the residents were all down-to-earth and fun to be around, and the program values education, wellness and work-life balance. Grand Rapids is the perfect-sized city for me – big enough where there’s lots to do but without the hassle of a large city. In addition, there are lots of beautiful areas to see on this side of the state.

- Interests/Hobbies
- Although I’m not from Michigan, I’ve lived in the Mitten State for almost a decade now, and over half of that time has been in Grand Rapids. When I had the opportunity to return to this city, I knew I had to jump on it. When I’m not at work or on call I enjoy playing music (string bass), playing indoor soccer year-round in an adult league, and alpine ski racing in the winter time. I’ve also picked up long distance running in recent years and have competed several races around Michigan including the Grand Rapids Marathon, Half Marathon and Riverbank Run 25K. This city is a great place to work and live, and has something to offer for just about everybody.
- Why Pine Rest
- Pine Rest seemed to check all the boxes I was looking for in a program: solid academic training, excellent potential to match into a fellowship, good work/life balance, and a great location. I have an interest in Forensic Psychiatry and in recent years Pine Rest has had excellent success in graduates being offered positions at some of the most highly respected programs around the country. Pine Rest also offers a Forensics Fellowship which provides even more exciting opportunities here in Grand Rapids.

- Fellowship
- Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services
- Professional/Clinical Interests
- I have particular interests in the intersection of psychiatry and the law, and will be part of Pine Rest’s newest fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry next year. I also have interests in inpatient psychiatric treatment, neuromodulation, teaching, and consultation to medical colleagues.
- Other Interests/Hobbies
- Biking, playing guitar, volunteering at church, and most importantly, being with my family.
- Why Pine Rest
- I wanted a place that would allow me to care for complex psychiatric patients, give opportunities to train and gain experience in neuromodulation treatments (ECT, TMS, DBS, etc.), all while being respected in a non-threatening, family-friendly environment. This was a tall order, but I found it here at Pine Rest. Here at Pine Rest I have been able to get the best training I can imagine, and still pursue my other interests.
