The Grand Rapids Business Journal (GRBJ) recently named Mark Eastburg, PhD, and Pine Rest as the winner in the health care category at its Newsmakers of the Year 2019 awards program. GRBJ editorial staff reviews the past year’s stories and decides on the most newsworthy people and events that impacted West Michigan. The news is separated into 16 categories with three finalists for each category.
The other two finalists in the health care category were Dr. Peter Hahn at Metro Health-University of Michigan Health and Robert Casalou at Trinity Health Michigan/Mercy Health. The GRBJ staff wrote about the opening of the Psychiatric Urgent Care Center in April and how it was designed to provide same-day assessment for adults experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms. The nomination also focused on the update in October of the center’s first six months, the number of patients assessed and how those patients came from 52 of Michigan’s 83 counties, 13 other states and Canada.
Dr. Eastburg, President & CEO, gave a brief acceptance speech on behalf of Pine Rest. He thanked the community for its support and the staff from all areas of Pine Rest that worked so hard to develop and implement this unique center. As of mid- January, the center has had just over 4,000 patients and has increased access to behavioral health services.
One Newsmaker of the Year is chosen from the winners in all categories. The winner was J.D. Loeks from Celebration Cinema. The Loeks family is a generous supporter of Pine Rest and our Psychiatry Residency Program which is part of the reason why creating the PUCC was possible – having psychiatry residents available to help with staffing.
