Same-day in-person behavioral health assessments for 6 -17 years old
The Pine Rest Pediatric Psychiatric Urgent Care provides same-day behavioral health assessments for children and teens who are six – seventeen years old with severe psychiatric symptoms, suicidal thoughts and/or behavioral crises.
Our team of pediatric-focused licensed mental health therapists, psychiatric providers, and medical assistants will:
- Evaluate your child and the reason for the urgent concern. In some instances, we may discuss medications.
- Help you create a safety plan, which will include parent and/or caregiver support.
- In some instances, we may be able to offer other treatment options, such as inpatient, partial hospitalization or outpatient treatment at Pine Rest or additional services in the community.

If you have Medicaid, please call ahead. Some plans require authorization for services.

Trying to decide if an Emergency Department or Psychiatric Urgent Care is the best place for treatment? We’ve put together a quick guide for you.
Your Local Emergency Department
Call 911 or go to your local Emergency Room if your child has:
Behavioral concerns with current aggressive behavior toward self or others
Disordered eating behaviors requiring medical testing or treatment
May include:
- Fainting
- Low heart rate
- Dizziness
Ingestion of a harmful substance or overdose
Self-harm behaviors requiring medical attention
Concerns your child is currently under the influence of substances
Suicide attempt requiring medical attention

- Panic attacks
- Obsessions
- Compulsions
- Avoidance of social situations
Behavioral concerns without current aggressive behavior toward self or others
May include
- Excessive crying or yelling
- Head banging
- Meltdowns
- Refusals to follow directions
- Tantrums
Depression
Feelings of sadness or hopelessness that have impacted daily life for 2 weeks or longer
Disordered eating behaviors not requiring medical testing or treatment
May include
- Bingeing (eating a lot of food in short amount of time often)
- Purging (throwing up after eating)
- Restrictive eating (not eating enough)
Medicine evaluations WITHOUT mental health treatment
Self-harm urges with NO NEED for medical attention
Substance use concerns NOT REQUIRING medical care
That are secondary to mental or behavioral health issues
Suicidal thoughts or feelings WITHOUT a current suicide attempt requiring medical attention

Request a Testing Appointment
• Psychological evaluations for autism or ADHD

• Form completion including for courts, child protective services or school placement
Request an Outpatient Appointment
• Symptoms are mild to moderate
• Daily activities are manageable
• Waiting for scheduled appointment seems reasonable

Visit a Community Mental Health (CMH) Access Center
• Individuals with Medicaid health plans who are in crisis or who need intensive services
• Mandatory for individuals with Medicaid seeking inpatient hospitalization, partial hospitalization or residential substance use disorder treatment
