Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness leave the greatest impact. Whether offering encouragement during a difficult day, sharing a relatable story, or leaving behind a handwritten note of affirmation, Hummingbird Award winner and Older Adult Unit psych tech Stephanie Budd has a remarkable ability to help those in her care feel seen, supported and valued.
The Hummingbird Award, created by Pine Rest’s Hospital & Residential Services (HRS) Patient Experience Workgroup and Psych Tech Council, is presented quarterly to recognize psych and nurse techs who demonstrate empathetic, compassionate and competent care in all they do. Recipients are honored for bringing professionalism, positivity and Pine Rest’s guiding behaviors—integrity, excellence, stewardship, diversity and empowerment—to those they serve each day.
Stephanie, who first received a Hummingbird Award in 2022, was recognized by her May 2026 nominators as a source of positivity and encouragement, someone who takes the time to truly connect with people and meet them where they are. Patients say that in their moments of distress, she listens without judgment, offers practical support and is a source of hope.
Several nominations also highlighted Stephanie’s willingness to share pieces of her own life and experiences when it helps patients feel understood. One individual recalled how a conversation about a beloved pet they were missing helped brighten a difficult day, while others praised Stephanie’s ability to create a calm, welcoming atmosphere throughout the unit.
Stephanie’s thoughtfulness also extends beyond everyday interactions. One individual recalled how she often leaves encouraging notes, including one message that resonated deeply: “No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough.”
We are truly grateful for the kindness, authenticity and compassion that Stephanie consistently brings to her work at Pine Rest. The meaningful relationships she fosters and the support she provides exemplify the spirit of the Hummingbird Award and leave a lasting impression on those in our care.
