Nursing leadership is pleased for the opportunity to recognize longstanding Pine Rest RN Joan Barnes with the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award!
This honor was created by the DAISY Foundation to recognize nurses who have devoted their careers to caring for others! The award itself highlights:
- 25+ years of a distinguished career as a nurse in clinical practice who promotes a positive image of professional nursing.
- Active engagement in the professional development of self and others in the nursing profession.
- Nursing professionals who serve as a role model and advocate for nursing practice and the advancement of nursing.
- Advocates for the improvement of patient care and enhancement of the patient experience.
For over 45 years, Joan has proven to be a wonderful example of patient care at Pine Rest. She spent most of her career working with children and adolescents, and also served as a Nursing Supervisor. During her time here, she has trained many new employees and is always eager to welcome to members to the team.
As Joan now prepares to retire, her colleagues remember her as a uniquely special and life-impacting individual who has touched many lives over her years of service. Recalls a fellow nurse:
“The Child & Adolescent Unit rewards members of the team with a superhero of the month award. This award was given to Joan in 2019 and still hangs on the unit today. But it has been altered to say, ‘Superhero of ALL TIMES’ by Joan’s night shift peers!”
Joan, your excellent care and supportive nature will be missed by both patients and staff members here at Pine Rest. We wish you the very best in your next chapter of life as you find the time to do what moves your heart!
DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem and was started by Tena Barnes, whose husband Patrick passed away from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura. She wanted an award that could be given to honor the extraordinary care and compassion that nurses give their patients. The DAISY Award is recognized and given in over 1,700 U.S. healthcare facilities across all 50 states and 11 other countries.
