
What is the purpose of the study?
The purpose of the study is to compare low amplitude-pulse (LAP) ECT to standard ECT. LAP-ECT has been shown in prior studies to have less memory side effects in depression. This study will also assess its effect on suicidal thoughts. We hope to learn more about the benefits of LAP ECT and if it can be a safer
alternative to standard ECT.
Who can participate?
Adults with a major depressive, bipolar, or schizoaffective disorder and are currently experiencing depression and suicidal thoughts.
- Adults referred clinically by their psychiatrist for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
- Other criteria may apply.
What is involved in participation?
- This study is voluntary and confidential.
- Receive ECT treatments at Pine Rest, 300 68th St SE, Grand Rapids.
- Visits will include physical and mental health assessments.
- Receive up to $300 in Meijer gift cards during participation.
