Full continuum of services and exemplary team place local behavioral health leader among top providers in the nation

In a report released by Modern Healthcare on March 7, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services was ranked the third largest not-for-profit behavioral health hospital in the country. Pine Rest’s ranking rose from fourth to third since the 2020 edition of the leading industry report, which ranks both government-run and not-for-profit behavioral health hospitals. Pine Rest ranks fifth largest when comparing both public and private hospitals.

“Our Michigan community has suffered more mental health challenges than ever before due to COVID-19, and we are honored that over 47,000 people trusted us for their care last year,” said Bob Nykamp, vice president & chief operating officer at Pine Rest. “While it’s not our goal to be the largest, we have grown in order to serve our Michigan friends and neighbors with the kind of quality care we would want for our own families.”

With a 198-bed hospital, 21 clinics and over 450 psychiatrists, clinicians, and advanced practice professionals providing a full continuum of inpatient, partial hospitalization, psychiatric urgent care, residential, outpatient, telehealth, addiction treatment and recovery, and specialized assessment services for children and adolescents, adults and seniors, Pine Rest is the largest behavioral health hospital in the state of Michigan.

“We have been rooted in Michigan for 112 years and are constantly growing and evolving to meet the needs of the people we live and work with,” Nykamp said. “Pine Rest is especially focused on improving access to care right now because that’s what our community needs. Our climb in the Modern Healthcare ranking is solely a reflection of our focus on living out our mission.”

For instance, in response to an alarming shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists in West Michigan and nationwide, Pine Rest established a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship program in 2017. Through this fellowship, psychiatric residents receive specialized training in the care of children and adolescents in outpatient, partial hospitalization, inpatient and residential settings at Pine Rest and in collaboration with other area healthcare and community service partners.

In the March report, Modern Healthcare ranked hospitals by net patient revenue based on 2020 CMS Hospital Cost Report data. In 2020, Pine Rest attained net patient revenue of $140.9 million for its 198-bed hospital. The publication is a leading source for healthcare business and policy news, research and information among hospital and healthcare executives. According to the magazine, about 25% of adults worldwide live with a mental health disorder. In the U.S. alone, spending on mental health and substance use disorder treatment is up more than 65% since 2010.
