Day program for patients 18+ provides intensive treatment without inpatient stays, fills gap in continuum of care
To help provide a better pathway to sobriety for their patients, Pine Rest is opening a new Partial Hospitalization (Day) Program for those seeking substance use disorder treatment. Offering short-term care tailored to the specific needs of each patient, this day program for patients 18 years of age or older provides an opportunity for more intensive treatment while allowing patients to return home in the evening. With an average length of treatment of five days a week, the group-based therapeutic environment focuses on the development of positive coping skills to help manage addiction. Pine Rest staff expect to treat up to 150 patients during the first year of the program with growth projected over time.
“We are thrilled to open this new partial program and to expand our services that help patients take the next steps in their recovery journey,” said Pine Rest Addictions Psychiatrist Cameron Risma, MD. “Our step-down approach to substance use disorders is deeply needed and it is an important response to our community’s addiction struggles as a result, in part, of the pandemic. We are excited to provide a service that will offer a continuum of care for those who seek support.”
Located on Pine Rest’s Cutlerville campus, this partial hospitalization (day) program is suited for individuals who no longer need 24/7 care from a residential program but are still experiencing cravings, lack social supports, need medication adjustments and/or medication assisted treatment and their relapse potential is high. Working on a variety of psychosocial concerns, skill building and relapse prevention planning, each patient meets individually with a psychiatrist/addictionologist, therapist, case manager and nurse to set treatment goals, manage medication and develop an aftercare plan. Group therapy to process emotions and learn skills is a vital part of the program as well as working with a Recovery coach for support.
“This often-missing level of care for substance use disorders will provide support for our patients while they learn new ways of living in their environment,” said Pine Rest Manager for the Retreat Outpatient Clinic Megan Roudabush, LMSW, CAADC. “There has been a gap for patients between residential care and intensive outpatient care and we can’t forget that many times the greatest hurdle for patients is when they come home and have to adjust to life without drugs and alcohol. And Pine Rest’s day program can be a bridge to help them transition.”
