Pine Rest Expands Access to Psychological Consultation Center Services

February 14, 2022

The Pine Rest Psychological Consultation Center doubled its size today with a move to a brand-new facility at 6500 Byron Center Ave, Suite 300, Byron Center, Michigan. The new facility becomes the region’s largest, expanding from 21 clinical offices and testing rooms to 40.

Pine Rest’s Psychological Consultation Center specializes in assessing the relationship between behavior and brain functioning, evaluating and diagnosing conditions like ADHD, autism, Alzheimer’s and more. In response to unprecedented demand for services, this expansion from Pine Rest’s main campus at 300 68th St. in Cutlerville will create more access for patients in need. The center serves patients from all over Michigan, including Kent, Ottawa, Allegan, Muskegon, Barry and Kalamazoo counties. Located just off M-6 and Byron Center Road, this brand-new building will bring mental health services to a bustling Byron Center health care hub.

Last year alone, the number of patients utilizing the Psychological Consultation Center grew by more than 40% to over 4,800 patients in 2021. The largest area of expanded need was among people ages 18 to 35.

“Unfortunately, the need has become so great that this expansion is simply to relieve the backlog of physician referrals and individuals seeking testing and assessments at the center,” said Mark Eastburg, PhD, President and CEO of Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services. “This new facility doubles the center’s capacity and allows us to expand our clinical team, increasing access for patients from throughout the West Michigan region and beyond.”

Clinicians at the Psychological Consultation Center use evidenced-based, state-of-the-art tests and a comprehensive clinical history that generally includes an interview, discussion with family members and a review of school and medical records to assess the patient needs. The goal is to provide an in-depth understanding of a person’s strengths and weaknesses that can yield helpful recommendations for short- and long-term treatment planning. Research has demonstrated that this methodology is much more accurate in diagnosis and recommendations than quick online assessments. Bringing a new mental health focus to the Byron Center area, this facility will offer assessments for children, adults and older adults through a team of health care professionals including psychologists, neuropsychologists and psychiatrists.

“We have already doubled the number of clinicians on our team providing neuropsychological assessments,” said Bruce Retterath, PhD, Clinical Director at the Psychological Consultation Center. “While this new location will primarily offer us the space and resources required to meet patient needs, it will also allow us to hire additional psychological experts across the full spectrum of services we provide.”

Pine Rest is hiring to fill openings for support roles, psychometrists, fully licensed psychologists and fellowship trained neuropsychologist within the Psychological Consultation Center. To view Pine Rest’s open positions, please visit pinerest.org/careers.
