New 136,000 square foot facility expands access to behavioral health care for children across Michigan

On March 18, 2026, Pine Rest celebrated the grand opening of its new Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health, a transformative facility designed to expand access to specialized mental health care for children and adolescents across Michigan.

The new center includes 66 inpatient beds, Michigan’s first Pediatric Psychiatric Urgent Care Center, and expanded specialty assessments and treatment, including an Eating Disorders Partial Hospitalization Program. The facility brings together a range of services designed specifically for children and adolescents, helping families access the right level of care during moments of crisis and throughout the recovery journey.

Community leaders, elected officials, donors and partners gathered for a dedication and press conference celebrating the milestone and the collaboration that made the center possible.

“Behavioral health challenges among children and teens have increased dramatically in recent years, and families across Michigan are struggling to find timely access to care,” said Mark Eastburg, PhD, president and CEO of Pine Rest. “The Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health represents a significant step forward in addressing that need. By bringing together inpatient care, urgent psychiatric services and specialized programming in one location, we are helping ensure that children and families can get the support they need when they need it most.”

The Pediatric Psychiatric Urgent Care Center, the first of its kind in Michigan, will provide same-day assessments and short-term stabilization for children experiencing acute behavioral health crises, helping families avoid unnecessary emergency department visits and connecting them more quickly with appropriate care.

“The Pediatric Center was intentionally designed around the unique needs of children and adolescents,” said Heide Rollings, MD, Medical Director of the Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health. “From specialized treatment programming to spaces created specifically for young patients and their families, every element of this facility reflects our commitment to providing compassionate, developmentally appropriate care that supports healing and recovery.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered remarks during the event, underscoring the urgent need to expand behavioral health care access for children and adolescents across Michigan.

“I’m committed to expanding access to quality, affordable health care across Michigan,” said Governor Whitmer. “That includes mental health care. The state of Michigan was proud to support the Pine Rest Pediatric Behavioral Health Center with over $50 million across two bipartisan budgets. This state-of-the-art, 66-bed center will make a big difference for young people struggling with mental health and provide them with a safe, supportive environment where they can get the help they need. Let’s keep having their backs and working together to build a bright future for Michigan.”

The Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health will begin inpatient admissions and urgent care visits on March 23, 2026. Outpatient appointments and Partial Hospitalization Program services will begin in the building on March 30, 2026.

The Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health is part of Pine Rest’s broader effort to expand access to behavioral health services across Michigan and strengthen the continuum of care for children and families.
