Pine Rest’s newly launched Adolescent Eating Disorders Partial Hospitalization (Day) Program is designed to support teens ages 12 through high school graduation who are struggling with eating disorders.
A 2023 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics found that 22% of children and adolescents worldwide show signs of disordered eating. Eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness behind opiate addiction.
“Nearly one in ten Americans will have an eating disorder in their lifetime. This staggering statistic holds true here in West Michigan, yet we consistently hear from families in our community that services for eating disorders are hard to find and difficult to navigate,” said Jenna Strodtbeck, LMSW, director of partial hospitalization programs at Pine Rest.
“Many providers refer families to care outside of Michigan due to the lack of local services, which is not only disruptive to kids’ social and school routines, but also puts a significant burden on families who must arrange for extended travel with their children,” said Strodtbeck. “Our Adolescent Eating Disorders Partial Hospitalization Program aims to fill this gap in care, right here in our community, with programming tailored specifically to the needs of children across Michigan.”
The Adolescent Eating Disorders Partial Hospitalization Program will provide treatment for adolescents with a range of eating disorder diagnoses, including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Teens will benefit from a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment approach that addresses their unique needs and promotes long-term recovery. Pine Rest anticipates the program will serve approximately 85 children per year.
