Pine Rest honors family’s four decades of sustained giving with named “healing campus.”

The David and Carol Van Andel Family Foundation has donated $8 million to the Pine Rest Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health. The gift will help fund construction of the 136,000 square foot, first-of-its-kind dedicated pediatric behavioral healthcare center in the state of Michigan.

David and Carol Van Andel Family Support Vital Pediatric Center

“We are tremendously grateful to the Van Andel family for their leadership gift in support of this vital new center,” said Pine Rest President and CEO, Dr. Mark Eastburg. “Too many kids deal with the pain and hopelessness of mental health issues with little or no access to the care they desperately need. The Van Andel family has demonstrated time and again their deep commitment to helping kids return to lives of joy.”

Pine Rest broke ground on the $98 million pediatric center in May of this year. It will feature a new Pediatric Psychiatric Urgent Care facility and new specialty outpatient services for eating disorders, substance use disorder, and autism spectrum disorder—programs that are expected to reach 10,000 more children each year. The center will also expand inpatient care to serve 800 more children annually, partial hospitalization programs, same-day psychiatric assessments to serve 7,500 children each year, and telehealth services to reach more children in rural areas and statewide.

“Pine Rest is critical to the health and wellbeing of our community,” said Carol Van Andel. “This is particularly true for our children. Pine Rest is stepping up to make sure no family in Michigan struggles to find their child the compassionate and expert care they need. We are honored to play a role in bringing this critically important pediatric center to the finish line.”

Van Andels Honored for Years of Sustained and Generous Support

Pine Rest also announced today that it will name the southern portion of the hospital’s main 68th Street campus in the family’s honor.

“In honor of the Van Andels’ generous and sustained support, we are pleased to announce that we will name the southern portion of this campus the David and Carol Van Andel Family Foundation Healing Campus,” said Executive Director of the Pine Rest Foundation, Donald Mackenzie, at a reception held this afternoon to celebrate the family’s support. “Three generations of the Van Andel family have provided generous philanthropic support and leadership to Pine Rest for over 60 years. Following in the footsteps of Jay and Betty Van Andel, whose giving and board service spanned nearly three decades, the David and Carol Van Andel Family Foundation—which now includes their four sons—has contributed $14 million over the past 30 years.”

The newly designated campus will encompass the Van Andel-Cook Center for Dementia & Geriatric Behavioral Health, the Jay and Betty Van Andel Center—which houses inpatient hospitalization, partial hospitalization, psychiatric urgent care and residential units—and the new Pine Rest Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health.

“My brothers and I are honored to follow in the footsteps of our parents and grandparents in supporting the vital services Pine Rest provides throughout our community and beyond,” said Christian Van Andel. “The rise in behavioral health issues among young people is alarming and underscores how critical this pediatric center will be in addressing our community’s needs.”

Pine Rest Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health Already Making an Impact

The Pine Rest Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health is slated for completion in the spring of 2026; however, the new specialty adolescent partial hospitalization services for eating disorders launched this month and is now accepting patients.
