Jean Holthaus shares coping strategies for travel anxiety on WZZM’s Alive & Well

Jean Holthaus, LISW, LMSW, was recently featured on WZZM13’s Alive & Well segment to talk about travel anxiety during the pandemic, and strategies that airline travelers can use to overcome their fears.

With COVID-19 cases spiking and flights across the country seeing cancellations due to staffing issues and other variables, some of us may be feeling uncertain about the prospect of airline travel–even as we itch to travel someplace warmer to escape the cold winter months.

Such unease is normal, says Holthaus, and just a sign of our body’s instinct to shift to fight-flight-freeze mode when faced with the unknown. If we can recognize our body doing this and take conscious steps to bring ourselves back to the present moment, we can overcome those anxious tendencies and move forward with our travel plans, and our lives!

Some of the tips shared by Jean Holthaus include:

  1. Acknowledge and accept your anxious feelings as a normal human response.
  2. Focus on what you can control. Don’t get caught up in wondering about worst case scenarios and what-ifs.
  3. Keep yourself in the here and now.


Jean Holthaus, LMSW, LISW has been providing outpatient therapy services since 1995 when she earned her Masters of Social Work degree from the University of Iowa. She has worked for Pine Rest since 1997. She currently serves as manager of the Telehealth Clinic and is also a Pine Rest Outpatient Regional Director.
