On April 8, 2020, WZZM’s Val Lego interviewed Bob VandePol, MSW, Executive Director of the Pine Rest Employee Assistance Program on the topic of how to stay at home together without getting hot under the collar.
With all the staying at home together, sometimes the quarters can get a little close sometimes, and tempers can get a little high.
“This is a very emotional event,” says VandePol. “It’s an event where we’re afraid, We’re frustrated, sometimes we’re bored. Those feelings often morph into anger. Anger comes out of hurt, fear, sadness many times. It’s important for us to realize that. Sometimes it feels contagious and instant. Yes, anger is contagious.”
“When someone is losing it, it’s easy for us to think of them as the aggressor. But often it’s because they are afraid. so often it helps if we can do things to make them feel safer.”
