The Role of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)

This presentation will provide an in-depth look at what occurs in the daily life of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). Statistics regarding sexual assault as well as a complete description of a medical forensic exam (“rape kit”) will be taught. The presentation will conclude with a brief description of the relations with the criminal justice system and how to be helpful to a survivor.

Presentation Objectives

  • Participants will gain a good understanding of what a “typical” forensic medical exam entails.
  • Participants will be able to use knowledge gained from this educational activity in their practice.

The Nursing Grand Rounds are held quarterly, are free of charge to attend, and are open to Pine Rest employees, Pine Rest Academy students, nursing instructors and interested nurses from any organization. Nursing contact hours will be provided.

    Cailyn TenHoeve, MSFN, RN

    Cailyn has been a registered nurse for 7 ½ years, starting her nursing career in the Helen DeVos Emergency Department before moving to Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services and working as an inpatient nurse on the Oak unit. She was promoted to Clinical Nursing Supervisor in 2022 and still works in this role. Cailyn received her BSN from Hope College in 2017 and graduated with her MSFN (Master of Science in Forensic Nursing) in 2022. She became a SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) in Spring 2021 and started an on-call SANE position at Resilience in Holland, MI where she is still on-call for 96 hours a month.
