Presentation Objectives

  • Identify the mechanism of action in the use of antipsychotic pharmacotherapy.
  • Identify the major difference between typical and atypical antipsychotic medication therapy.
  • Improved comfort level with the dopaminergic pathways and the impact of pharmacotherapy use in schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

The Nursing Grand Rounds are held quarterly, are free of charge to attend, and are open to Pine Rest employees, Pine Rest Academy students, nursing instructors and interested nurses from any organization. Nursing contact hours will be provided.

    Joe Karb, RN, MSN, CENP

    Joe Karb is a registered nurse licensed to practice in Canada as well as the United States holding a master’s degree in nursing with a focus on leadership as well as being Board Certified in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP). Joe practiced in a variety of clinical settings which included Emergency, Intensive care, Surgical care and General Medicine. He has been nursing for 27 years. Joe is a proven leader in healthcare, holding various positions in leadership over the past 19 years. Joe has led teams in the areas of Surgery (Orthopaedic and General), Intensive Care, Restorative Care (physical rehabilitation) and Mental Health. Joe has held positions in all levels of leadership from Clinical Service Manager of an individual Unit to Vice-President over a Service Line. Joe has experience working in both the Canadian and American Healthcare markets and has been involved in many safety initiatives and program innovation projects using change management theory to drive initiatives towards success. Joe is currently serving the community of Grand Rapids at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services as the Director of Nursing for Inpatient Mental Health and Addictions. A role that allows him to come alongside some of the most vulnerable people in our communities and provide hope and care.
