This virtual course, offered through our Traverse City Clinic, follows the Love and Logic: Adults Supporting Youth with Challenging
Pasts® training program developed by Charles Fay, Ph.D.
Love and Logic® provides practical tools and techniques that help adults achieve respectful, healthy relationships with their children. We welcome all parents, guardians, general and special education teachers, counselors, psychologists, foster parents, adoptive parents, and anyone else serving youth who have experienced trauma.
The program comprises of six sessions for mastering skills essential to effective parenting. Within these sessions, participants will engage with a variety of instructional media, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience:
- Video Presentations: Charles Fay, Ph.D. delivers dynamic discussions, modeling, and practical examples for each skill.
- Readings: Supplemental readings enhance comprehension and application of the concepts presented in the program.
- Structured Group Exercises and Discussions: Participants will engage actively in group exercises, fostering interaction and providing a platform for meaningful discussions.
Course Objectives
- How trauma affects the brain, including its impacts on the social, emotional, and behavioral adjustment of youth.
- Strategies for responding to defiance and other serious forms of misbehavior.
- Avoiding power struggles while setting limits.
- Teaching character and responsibility through modeling and applying logical consequences instead of punishment.
- Teaching children healthy problem-solving skills.
- Skills for remaining emotionally healthy while meeting the needs of these youth.
- Helping children prepare to resist drugs, alcohol, violence, and other dangerous behaviors.
