Human Trafficking from a Trauma-Informed Lens

Wedgwood’s Manasseh Project is an outreach ministry of Wedgwood Christian Services dedicated to ending the sexual exploitation of young men and women in West Michigan. Through community education and collaboration, Wedgwood’s Manasseh Project provides support for victims of human trafficking and empowers the people of West Michigan to end modern day slavery. This presentation will be focused on identifying victims of sexual exploitation, effective interventions, and treating victims of sex trafficking.

 

Presentation Goals:

  • Understand how ‘trafficking’ is legally defined.
  • Understand the continuum of victimization in the life of a prostituted person.
  • Gain skills and language to advocate effectively for victims.
  • Broaden knowledge on the root causes of trafficking.
  • Learn the arenas for exploitation.
  • Build skills to identify and intervene in the life of a victim.
  • Learn tools to work with victims from a trauma lens perspective.

Presenter

  • Nikeidra Battle-Debarge

    Nikeidra Battle-DeBarge is a credible leader within the social services field with over 19 years of experience in case management, program development and advocacy for youth and families. She is a motivated achiever with a drive to effect change within the community, while helping individuals improve their health and well-being. She has been recognized by several prestigious organizations including Grand Rapids Business Journal’s 40 under Forty, GRBJ’s 50 Most Influential Women, Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce’s- Athena’s Organizational Leadership Award and GRCC’s W.W PLUMMER Humanitarian Giant Award. Nikeidra serves as Coordinator for the Manasseh Project of Wedgwood Christian Services. The Manasseh Project is an outreach ministry of Wedgwood Christian Services dedicated to ending the sexual exploitation of young women and men in West Michigan. Nikeidra aided Kent Intermediate School District Solutions to End Exploitation (SEE) and Wedgwood’s Manasseh Project in securing a $1.5 million dollar grant to provide human trafficking prevention education and a human trafficking school safety protocol within the district. In 2012 Nikeidra cofound a non-profit organization, New Destiny Pathways Inc, which provides affordable and supportive independent living housing to young women, ages 17-21, aging out of the foster care system.
