Pine Rest Grand Rounds

Developing High Performing Clinical and Research Teams

Grand Rounds Presentation

What does it take to run a high-performing clinical or research team within large, complex, and matrixed organizations, such as within healthcare and academic industries? In this presentation, Dr. Mira Brancu will share the most common challenges teams face when they are not performing at their best, including a lack of shared goals, explicit expectations, management of different work styles, team structures and processes, and role clarity. Overlooking these challenges leads to unnecessary conflict, artificial harmony, poor delegation, inefficient processes, miscommunication, frustration, and greater staff turnover, which directly affect patient or research outcomes. Dr. Brancu will review the foundational mechanisms all “real” and highly effective teams must have in place to be highly effective and how you can assess whether there are any gaps you need to address on your team. By the end of the presentation, you will learn at least one tool you can use to support your team in being highly effective and cohesive.

Objectives

  1. List at least 3 common challenges experienced by teams when they are trying to work effectively together.
  2. Describe at least one element of what makes a “real” team.
  3.  Learn how to apply at least one tool to support effective teamwork and teaming efforts.
