Pine Rest is joining an international clinical research study. This clinical trial explores medication that is already approved in some countries to treat adolescents with schizophrenia, and children and adolescents with bipolar I disorder, manic or mixed episode with or without psychotic features.
This Phase III, open label study is designed to evaluate the long term safety and tolerability of the study drug. All study participants will take the study drug, not placebos, and they will not be randomized into treatment groups. Several health factors will be assessed regularly during the treatment period.
Participant Criteria for Study
- Adolescents ages 13 – 17 years of age with schizophrenia or children and adolescents ages 10-17 with bipolar I disorder, manic or mixed episode with or without psychotic features;
- In relatively good health;
- Do not have a history of substance/alcohol dependence within the past six months;
- Other factors to be reviewed in introductory interview.
Study participation for those enrolled in the study is two and one-half years. Participants will need to visit the Pine Rest campus on 68th Street in Cutlerville about 23 times during their study participation.
Study participants will receive study related mental health assessments, physical exams, laboratory tests and the study medication at no charge. Participants will receive a small fixed stipend to reimburse for travels and other expenses.
Psychiatrist Gilbert Masterson, MD, is the principal investigator of the Pine Rest study. He is a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist.
