Sherry Steenwyk, PhD

Sherry was raised in Minnesota and has also lived in California, Tennessee, Illinois and Indiana. During college, Sherry became interested in integrating faith with psychology.

Sherry received a BA in Psychology and a BA in Religion at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. She earned a Master’s Degree in Psychology at Ball State University in Indiana. She felt a sense of calling to continue her education at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California where she earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Christian Leadership. During her time at Fuller she conducted research about God images, couples counseling and peace-making. Sherry has worked at community mental health centers, a medical center and three university counseling centers. She has provided individual, couples and group counseling, conducted comprehensive personality, intellectual and ADHD assessments, and taught college courses at Azusa Pacific University and Purdue. She is trained as a generalist therapist to work with a variety of people and concerns. She completed her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral residency at Purdue University Counseling and Psychological Services where she also specialized in the evaluation and treatment of substance abuse.

Sherry has a passion for therapy. She works hard to understand and connect with each person she sees. She uses a relational, client-centered approach and collaborates with clients to help them develop more compassion for themselves as they address their concerns in therapy.

Sherry loves spending time with her husband, children, friends, and family. She enjoys being creative with crafts, photography, sewing, quilting, cooking and baking. She also enjoys God’s outdoor creation by travelling, spending time on the lake, fishing or walking along the beach.
