“I am motivated by the process of partnering with clients as they deepen their understanding of themselves and take steps that lead to real change. It is meaningful to see clients gain insight into what feels stuck, practice evidence-based coping skills, and apply that understanding to their daily lives. Supporting clients during moments that feel uncertain or challenging, while seeing confidence and stability built over time, strengthens my commitment to this work.”

In therapy, Shawna focuses on helping clients clarify what they are experiencing now, while also working together to shape what comes next. Her approach is integrative and action-oriented, often incorporating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Motivational Interviewing. Shawna draws on evidence-based strategies in a flexible way, tailoring each treatment plan to the unique needs of the person in front of me, always with collaboration and empowerment at the core.

Shawna provides outpatient therapy to individuals ages 11+. Areas of focus may include anxiety, depression, grief, trauma recovery, and life transitions. Care is individualized with attention to readiness, personal strengths, frustration tolerance, and building reliable routines that support emotional and functional stability.

Shawna also conducts psychological evaluations for children, adolescents and adults ages 6-59. Evaluation findings help clarify diagnostic questions and inform treatment planning. Results are often used to support therapy goals, eligibility for accommodations, and connection to appropriate services when indicated.

Shawna is a fully licensed clinical psychologist at the Pine Rest Psychological Consultation Center. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in biostatistics from Grand Valley State University, followed by a master’s and PhD in psychology from Wayne State University. Shawna’s research focuses on relationship processes such as attachment, social support and parenting that fosters resilience, especially in youth and families facing adversity. Her clinical training in Detroit and the greater Boston area included community mental health, special education, and behavioral health settings, where she developed a focus on culturally responsive care for diverse communities.

Shawna Tanner participates in the Diversity Collective.
