Sam uses person-centered, trauma informed, strengths based approaches with evidence-based interventions from modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI) to help her clients meet their recovery goals. Although addiction is her specialty, she also works with co-occurring issues like depression, anxiety and trauma that so often come with substance abuse disorders. Sam has personal experience and a special interest in supporting the Native American community, military and Veteran population
Sam’s education, along with her many life experiences, allow her to offer a culturally competent, relaxed, easy-going, empowering, compassionate, and empathetic therapeutic practice where people feel safe to be 100% themselves, free of judgment or discrimination. Sam also believes in incorporating humor and lightheartedness when appropriate, helping to create a more relaxed and open environment where clients feel comfortable.
Sam is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC). She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Northern Michigan University. She began her social work career in Michigan’s U.P. working for Community Mental Health Services before moving to the Grand Rapids area in 2021. Sam has been with Pine Rest since 2022 where she has been dedicated to individual and group counseling within inpatient detoxification, residential care and outpatient services at the Retreat Clinic.
