Faith Statement

As a follower of Christ and a licensed Clinical Psychologist, I approach therapy with a deep commitment to compassion, presence and the belief that hope can be found even in life’s most complex and painful moments. My faith shapes not only how I live, but how I practice — guiding me to value generosity, grace, gratitude, empathy, and justice in every therapeutic encounter.

I consider it a profound honor to walk alongside clients as they explore questions of faith, doubt and spiritual identity. Whether you’re seeking to apply the teachings of Christ to modern life, wrestling with theological uncertainty, or simply longing to integrate your spiritual values into your healing journey, I offer a safe and respectful space for that dialogue.

I believe faith is deeply personal — no two people live it out in exactly the same way. My goal is to help you take ownership of your unique spiritual path in a way that feels authentic and moves you toward the fullest expression of who you were created to be.

Though I am deeply rooted in the Christian tradition, I welcome individuals from all backgrounds and faith perspectives. I strive to be a resource for anyone seeking a therapist who honors the spiritual dimension of life and approaches healing with humility, curiosity and care.

Clinician Bio

“One of the most meaningful parts of my work as a therapist is witnessing growth. It’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible—how resilience, courage and determination can carry us through even the most difficult times. I believe in the strength of the human spirit, and I’m continually inspired by the bravery of those who step into the unknown to pursue healing and change. Therapy offers a unique space for transformation, and I consider it a privilege to walk alongside my clients on their journeys.”

Therapy with Dr. Steenwyk is a highly collaborative experience. He works closely with his clients to understand their story and develop treatment goals that reflect who they are and where they want to go in life. Drawing from Person-Centered Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Dr. Steenwyk helps clients clarify what matters most to them, and build the skills needed to move consistently toward those values.

Dr. Steenwyk specializes in working with adults struggling with depression, anxiety and mood instability issues. He also has a strong interest in supporting individuals dealing with chronic health conditions, anger and aggression issues, and concerns related to faith and spirituality. In addition to individual therapy, Dr. Steenwyk leads Pine Rest’s Healthy Living Group and Dialectical Skills Group—group therapy interventions designed to teach essential mental health skills and foster peer support for individuals managing chronic mental health conditions.

Dr. Steenwyk earned dual BAs in Psychology and Philosophy from Calvin College and completed his graduate training at Fuller Theological Seminary, where he received a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and a Master’s in Christian Leadership. He is a professional member of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science and Division 49 of the American Psychological Association, and he also holds certification in DBT from Psychwire.

Dr. Steenwyk participates with Faith Community Outreach, an initiative within Pine Rest that seeks to connect area clergy, churches and ministries to services available from Pine Rest; as well as develop new services specifically designed to benefit the faith community.

Mark Steenwyk participates in the Diversity Collective.
