Mark Kole is a Limited Licensed Psychologist. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and Master’s of Arts degree in counseling psychology from Western Michigan University. After graduating, Mark served as a Limited Licensed Psychologist on an assertive community treatment team for four years in Lapeer, Michigan, then worked for OnPoint in Allegan, Michigan, for nearly 23 years before joining the Pine Rest Portage Clinic in 2023. While at OnPoint, Mark completed evaluations and provided individual and group therapy for adults diagnosed with mental illness, developmental disabilities and co-occurring substance use disorders.

Mark has experience treating depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, as well as other concerns. he has been certified in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) treatment since 2010, and has experience providing DBT in both group settings and individual therapy. Mark completed training to provide gender-affirming care for individuals with gender dysphoria in rural settings. Working with individuals in the LGLBTQ+ community is an area of interest for him.

Mark’s approach to therapy is to first create a safe space and to model the same compassion that he helps individuals cultivate for themselves. Therapy is a collaborative process, and Mark treats others the way he would want to be treated. Strengths are identified to help others overcome obstacles they are encountering. Listening and asking questions are important in getting to know each person as an individual. Mark is respectful of others’ beliefs and seeks to provide therapy that fits within a variety of religious, spiritual, and cultural beliefs. Including DBT, Mark uses a cognitive-behavioral approach (CBT) in therapy, believing we need to change both our thoughts and behaviors for best results.
