“I am inspired by the scripture, ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit’ (Psalm 34:18).” I find deep purpose in serving as a clinical mental health therapist. It is truly an honor to walk alongside individuals facing substance use disorders and other addictions, helping them navigate the challenges that often carry deep shame and stigma. I believe addiction is a brain disease that requires targeted, compassionate treatment to foster lasting recovery and success.

“In a world where many feel overlooked or overwhelmed, I strive to create a safe, empathetic space where clients can feel heard, explore the underlying forces shaping their thoughts and behaviors, and reconnect with their core values. I’m passionate about guiding clients toward a meaningful life by helping them focus on what truly matters, ultimately empowering them to recover and thrive.”

Katie employs a variety of therapeutic techniques, including person-centered therapy, dialectical behavior therapy-informed (DBT-I), motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and relapse prevention strategies to tailor each session to the unique needs of her clients. By assessing individual needs, she combines these approaches to effectively address substance use disorders and promote lasting recovery. Katie also believes in incorporating humor and lightheartedness when appropriate, helping to create a more relaxed and open environment where clients can feel comfortable, supported and empowered on their journey to recovery.

Therapy sessions with Katie will be compassionate and nonjudgmental and typically consist of open conversation, skill-building, enhancement of recovery supports, and a focus on one actionable step to take between sessions. This guided approach ensures that clients feel empowered and actively involved in their treatment, goals and outcomes. Clients can expect to be validated, supported and challenged while gaining valuable insights to enhance their healing process.

Katie is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC). She earned her undergraduate degree in psychology and her Master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Western Michigan University. The guiding principles of her practice as an LPC center around personal development, prevention, wellness, empowerment, and advocacy. Since 2018, Katie has been dedicated to counseling in various capacities at Pine Rest, including roles within a women’s substance use residential treatment facility, a partial hospitalization program, inpatient detoxification and residential care, and outpatient services within the Retreat Clinic. She also has the privilege of serving as the clinical team lead for the Retreat Clinic, where she collaborates with a talented team to ensure the highest quality of care for their clients.

Kaitlin Hatchew participates in the Diversity Collective.
