Julia Knowles (she/her) is a Limited License Master of Social Work at the Pine Rest Telehealth Clinic working with clients age 9-40. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Social Work and also holds degrees in music education and cello performance from the University of Michigan School of Music.
Julia joins Pine Rest with cross-occupational experience that enriches her work with adolescents, teens and young adults. Her previous work as a middle school teacher and musician informs her understanding of how people learn, and the safety and creativity necessary for expansion and healing.
Bringing curiosity to each therapeutic relationship, Julia works to understand the unique strengths and struggles of each person. She focuses on providing a compassionate and supportive space for clients to explore and develop the skills necessary for healing and growth. Julia’s commitment to a holistic therapeutic approach allows each person to feel heard, understood and capable as they manage life’s transitions and ultimately build inner resilience to weather what lies ahead.
Julia has training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), and Somatic Experiencing (SE). She utilizes elements from these evidence-based modalities to create personalized treatment plans that are responsive and reflective of clients’ needs and preferences. Her areas of practice include, but are not limited to, anxiety, depression, attachment and mood disorders, grief, trauma, family and life transitions, identity development and peer relationships. She is a LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist.
Julia lives in Ann Arbor where you can find her in the vegetable garden with her cat or playing cello in her string quartet.
