“I believe in the power of healing through relationships. I have always been drawn to understanding the “whys” of the personal and interpersonal. In developing greater personal insight and self-knowledge, I find people can live more in line with their values and truest selves to lead a meaningful life. The therapeutic relationship is a unique space to come as you are; to hear the messages of your emotions, and develop curiosity and compassion for the parts of yourself that can feel challenging on your own. My unique background in music education helps inform my unconditional belief in a person’s ability to find their inner wisdom with the support of skills and relationships. Like music making, therapy is an inherently relationship-based pathway for personal understanding and emotional expression. I enjoy helping people understand how they learn so that the tools of therapy feel easily translatable to their unique brains and bodies.”

Julia provides a warm and affirming space to explore the strengths and struggles of kids, teens and adults. Clients can expect therapy to be reflective and collaborative. She works to deeply understand her clients’ needs to provide a tailored treatment plan, often incorporating a mind-body approach. Working together, you will feel equipped and capable by building new tools to navigate life’s transitions and build inner resilience to weather any storm that may lie ahead. Sessions with Julia are a balance of noticing, naming and feeling emotional experiences, building awareness of thoughts and communication patterns, understanding the impact of past experiences on present difficulties and practicing more compassionate ways of understanding and relating to yourself and others. Therapeutic goals are set and reviewed regularly so you feel an ongoing sense of growth and progress.

Julia is committed to providing a holistic therapeutic approach based on curiosity, compassion and non-judgement. She incorporates interventions from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). She also provides psychoeducation on various interventions tuned to the age and learning preferences of her clients. Julia is a LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist.

Julia is a Limited License Master of Social Work. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Social Work and also holds degrees in music education and cello performance from the University of Michigan School of Music.

Julia Knowles participates in the Diversity Collective.
