Douglas Cushman, LMSW
Douglas is a licensed clinical social worker with 30 years experience in the human services field. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Social Work from Hope College in 1983 and a master’s of Clinical Social Work degree from Michigan State University in 1988.
His professional experience includes providing individual, group, and family therapy to children, teenagers, and adults. Douglas is a very versatile clinician and has worked in a variety of treatment settings including residential, foster care, home-based services, outpatient clinic, and hospital in-patient.
Douglas’ areas of expertise include cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, family and child issues including adoption, depression and anxiety, anger management, grief and loss, PTSD and other trauma-related issues.
In addition, Douglas has a passion to assist patients in developing a stronger Christian faith and approaches therapy from a solid biblical perspective. Douglas is skilled in helping patients successfully apply the truth of scripture to their specific situations in order to promote healing and long-term growth.
Douglas has been married for almost 30 years, has four children, (two of them by adoption) and he and his wife were also foster parents for eight years.
Douglas participates with Faith Community Outreach, an initiative within Pine Rest that seeks to connect area clergy, churches, and ministries to services available from Pine Rest; as well as develop new services specifically designed to benefit the faith community.
