DeWanda Gichemi, LMSW

DeWanda earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia and her Master of Social Work Degree from Grand Valley State University. In 1996-97 DeWanda actively participated as a Team Lead/Field Coordinator for the Grand Rapids Service Corps-Michigan’s AmeriCorps Program. While serving in AmeriCorps, time was dedicated to community rebuilding via Habitat for Humanity, neighborhood rebeautification, and educational excellence by implementing tutorial programs for disadvantaged youths within the Grand Rapids community. As a strong advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and education locally and abroad, she provided HIV/AIDS case management services in Durban, South Africa to South African women and their children affected by HIV/AIDS in 1999.

DeWanda has practiced in the field of Social Work since 1991. She has worked with culturally diverse populations of adults, teenagers, children, infants, and families in jail, residential, home-based, group, and outpatient settings. DeWanda has also worked as a clinician in Infant Mental Health and Adult Mental Health as well as the Strong Beginnings Community Initiative Program which addressed Perinatal Mood Disorders and depression in African-American women.

In 2014, DeWanda joined the Professional Practice Group as an Outpatient Therapist at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services providing individual, family, and marital therapy. Although, she has valuable experience and expertise with various mental health disorders, her special interests are Perinatal Mood Disorders, Depression, Anxiety/Panic Disorders, Family Dynamics, Stress Management, Anger Management, and Infant Mental Health whereas DeWanda values and demonstrates the commitment to building the parent-infant/child attachment relationship. She is endorsed as an Infant and Family Specialist by the Michigan Association of Infant Mental Health (MI-AIMH), is certified in Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and is an active member of the Grand Rapids Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
