“I believe in the human capacity to change. Many of us grow up in environments that have negatively influenced how we think and feel about ourselves and how we relate with others. We tend to engage in those same relationship dynamics as adults which can really cause distress. I truly believe we do the best we can with what we know at the time, but we have the ability and obligation to change what we know so we can live more fulfilling lives.”

Christa’s clients find they are met with compassion and acceptance for who they are and where they are at in life. She finds it most helpful to determine what works best for you – wanting more directions, suggestions or homework activities; encouragement to implement more self-compassion; space to explore thoughts, feelings and behaviors. You might hear her say “everything is modifiable” as we work to determine what works best for you.

Christa uses a combination of evidence-based strategies which are associated with Motivational Interviewing (MI); Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Dialectical Behavioral Therapy strategies (DBT); Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR using bilateral stimulation); Psychoeducation on Interpersonal Neurobiology; and she has extensive training in treating substance use disorders.

Christa encourages her clients to share their questions and concerns while exploring how past experiences have influenced their core beliefs about themselves and the world around them. Therapy will involve working together to evaluate those beliefs and understand how they impact your current life. Christa believes in learning and practicing practical coping strategies, and homework assignments are often provided. Christa will help you define goals for treatment and work together to identify strategies to meet those goals.

Christa has provided psychotherapy services since 1993 when she earned her Master of Social Work degree from Michigan State University. She has worked for Pine Rest since January 2025. Christa earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hope College with a major in psychology and minors in Latin and Ancient Civilizations. She has worked in home-based therapy, child welfare, pregnancy counseling, adoption (international and domestic), and has had a specialty credential (CAADC) for treating substance use disorders since 2006.

Christa Galer participates in the Diversity Collective.
