Cal Meuzelaar, ACSW, LMSW

Cal is a Licensed Master’s Social Worker with the Campus Clinic and has over 30 years of experience, primarily at Pine Rest. Since 2012, he is also on faculty at the Broadlawns Medical Center Physician Residency program as the Behavioral Specialist. He earned his BA from Dordt College in 1977 and his MSSW from the University of Wisconsin in 1980. He works with adults and older adults.

Areas of clinical interest include post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and especially chronic pain and couples/relationship issues. Having been born into a minister’s family and raised in the parsonage, he’s interested in addressing the unique challenges of pastors and their families. Cal is available for organization consultation; he has extensive training in the operation of organizational systems. He’s available for group presentations addressing topics including stress management, effective communication and conflict resolution. These and other concerns can also be addressed in time limited process groups.

Cal participates with Faith Community Outreach, an initiative within Pine Rest that seeks to connect area clergy, churches, and ministries to services available from Pine Rest; as well as develop new services specifically designed to benefit the faith community.

Faith Statement

My name is Jean Holthaus and I am a licensed clinical social worker and have been practicing for sixteen years. I work with individuals, couples, and families. I have a BA in elementary education and have taught every grade K-8, although primarily I taught junior high math and science.
I received my MSW from the University of Iowa and have done extensive training around integrating faith and therapy--including the training to be a Commission Pastor through the RCA. I have also received training from Cloud and Townsend (boundaries), Terry Wardle (spiritual formation and healing), Gary Smalley (relationships), John Briere (healing from trauma) and many others. I believe Christ is the source of all healing and my desire is to be a vessel through which the healing power and love of Christ can flow to touch the lives of those in need.

I grew up in the church and became actively engaged in following Christ as my savior when I was in eighth grade. In my mid-twenties, I experienced a life-altering crisis which exposed my deep woundedness as well as my performance based life and faith. This crisis set into motion a journey to know and live intimately connected to a God who not only saved me, but loves me and wants to be an active part of every aspect of my life.

As I learned to live believing I was loved by God independent of anything I could every say or do, I experienced deep healing in my life and grew in my desire to walk with others on their healing journey. As I listen and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, I have the privilege of walking with people into places of deep wounding and pain in their lives as a vessel of God’s love—love which brings healing and restoration.
As a Christian therapist, I believe biological, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual factors all contribute to the problems people encounter. I believe God also works through each of these avenues to bring healing. I actively integrate faith in every therapy session at the level my clients feel comfortable, but my faith undergirds all I do in therapy. It is a privilege and a blessing to walk with people on their healing journeys.
