“Working through challenging chapters of our story can lead us to question our understanding of ourselves and our place in the world, making hope feel messy and tenuous. As a therapist, I consider it an honor to step into your story and walk alongside you as you pick up the broken pieces, examine them, and explore paths toward hope and healing. My work is anchored in the belief that we are all capable of moving through challenges with increasing wholeness and well-being.”

Regardless of what brings you to therapy, Amy Kate works to create a warm, collaborative space where you feel comfortable and supported as you explore your story, consider new narratives, and move forward with hope. She recognizes that building trust, sharing your story and working toward change take courage, and she will hold your story with care.

Amy Kate is a client-centered, relational, and integrative therapist. Her work is grounded in Adlerian theory, which provides focus and stability throughout the therapy process. She also incorporates evidence-based interventions from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Acceptance and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. Her use of trauma-informed and resilience-oriented approaches support discovery, insight, mind-body-spirit connectedness, growth, change, and healing.

Early sessions with Amy Kate focus on your story, your inner understanding of life, and what motivates you. Together, you look with intention at what is troubling you, gradually clarify goals, and explore next steps. Sessions with Amy Kate tend to be conversational and often reflect aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, with its emphasis on being safely present, observing emotion, identifying values, connecting with meaning, and taking small, achievable steps forward.

Amy Kate brings decades of close work with children, adolescents and families to her role as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from St. Olaf College and a Master of Science in Professional Counseling from Concordia University Wisconsin. Amy Kate specializes in working with older teens and adults who are navigating anxiety, trauma, relational challenges, and parenting concerns. She also has experience working with medical providers, first responders and care givers, as well as clients facing domestic violence and chronic pain or chronic illness.

Amy Kate Petersen participates in the Diversity Collective.
