When to Choose Medically Monitored Detox
A medical detox is essential when an individual is at risk of withdrawal symptoms that are uncomfortable, painful, traumatic, or life-threatening. The risk varies based on the substance, frequency of use, length of time of use, as well as underlying mental health and medical conditions. The following are some indicators that you or a loved one is a good candidate for medical detox and you should discuss with your physician and the treatment facility.
- Using large amount of a substance regularly
- Using a substance over a long period of time
- Feel less effect over time from using the same amount of a substance
- Need increasing amounts of a substance to achieve the usual effect
- Crave a substance when you do not have access to it
- Tried to quit using a substance and found that you could not do so without help
Patients in a medically monitored detox program are supervised around the clock by medical personnel and may be treated with medications to reduce symptoms, control cravings and keep the client safe and comfortable.
Substances that often require medical detox are:
- Alcohol
- Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Librium, Valium, Klonopin)
- Methamphetamines
- Opiates (heroin, fentanyl, morphine, prescription opiates such as Vicodin, Hydrocodone, Oxycontin)
- Prescription medications
