Pine Rest currently has 8 outpatient clinics that are licensed for substance abuse/addictions treatment. Along the Lake Shore this would include Holland, Zeeland,
Grand Haven and Muskegon. In addition to the traditional outpatient services
offered at these sites, the Holland Clinic has been providing outpatient
group services for men and women and intensive outpatient programming
since February, 2004. Pine Rest’s vision is to increase the continuum
of treatment for both primary substance abuse/addictions/dependent clients, especially
for those with dual diagnosis issues.
WHAT IS AN INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT
PROGRAM?
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is defined as a minimum of
9 hours of treatment weekly. Our groups
meet 3 times a week for 3 hours each day and have psycho-educational/didactic
and homework components. Individual and family sessions occur as needed.
Programming for IOP along the Lake Shore is at the Holland Clinic. Men
and women are together 2 days each week, on Monday and Tuesday from 5
to 8p.m., and meet separately for a specific “men’s” (Thursday)
and “women’s” (Wednesday) issue focus for the third
day of the treatment. Generally, individuals attend IOP an average of
three to eight weeks, but actual time in treatment is tailored to each
individual’s needs and eligibility considerations. Persons with
addiction to many different “drugs of choice” are treated
in the same group. Once a month family members are invited to participate
in a Family Night educational program as a part of their IOP experience.
IOP programming addresses: education on chemical dependency, tools to
develop a program of recovery and to manage triggers and urges, assignments
to encourage progress outside the group setting and development of a
recovery support system.
Once stabilized, clients can be steeped down to weekly group therapy
while maintaining the relationship they have already built with the therapist
and peers.
WHAT ARE TRADITIONAL OUTPATIENT SERVICES?
Traditional outpatient
services include individual, couple, family sessions to address the many
issues
and needs of the chemically dependent person and his/her family members.
It also includes group services to assist with “tool” skill
building and support as the chemically dependent person journeys into
the recovery process.
WHO IS APPROPRIATE?
IOP is designed for those persons
not needing residential care, but who are likely to relapse without
close assistance and monitoring.
Simply put, IOP is for chemically dependent clients unable to maintain
abstinence in traditional outpatient care and therefore are at risk.
Traditional outpatient care is designed for those persons not needing
residential or IOP intensive services, who have sufficient support
and motivation for change, have clearly acknowledged their substance abuse/addictions
problem and need to acquire some tools to assists them in the recovery
process.
HOW DO I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT OR REFER?
Contact the nearest Pine
Rest location to set up an evaluation for traditional outpatient services.
For IOP, contact the Holland clinic for an evaluation. Pine Rest attempts
to have the initial evaluation for IOP completed by the clinician who
facilitates the IOP group in order to increase the engagement of the
client. Payers frequently have separate Mental Health and substance abuse/addictions benefits that need to be explored during the assessment process.
WHAT
IF I HAVE A MENTAL HEALTH AND A substance abuse/addictions PROBLEM?
Many clients
in the IOP have dual diagnosis issues. Clients can be stepped
up to receive
IOP care and then return to their mental health provider when stabilized.
With many payers, the primary therapist can continue to see the client
while in the IOP program.
