Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services offers
7 psychiatric residential treatment facilities/programs for adolescents,
4 locked
programs and
3 open programs. We use the C.H.O.I.C.E.S. Model of care, which is
trauma based. All facilities are state-licensed and accredited by
the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations
(JCAHO). The campus also has ball fields, a gym, and a swimming pool.
Residents attend Kentwood Public Schools either on the Pine Rest
campus or in Kentwood
Schools.

- Cedar Lodge - is a 40 bed, 4-pod, secured (locked) treatment program
for teenage boys and girls. This brand new state-of-the art 23,000 square-foot
secured facility opened Oct. 17, 2006. The facility boasts private rooms
in four separate pods, secured outdoor space, integrated sound and video
surveillance, school classrooms integrated into each pod, and updated
treatment curriculum. Length of stay is a minimum of six months as residents
receive intensive treatment for their mental illness. Residents have
a history of significant psychiatric illness and/or behavioral disorders
and are unable to function in a less restrictive setting. Their psychiatric
problems are exacerbated by other issues, such as problems at school
or within the legal system, abuse and neglect, trauma, learning deficits,
and chaotic family situations.

- Birch Lodge – is a 12-bed, open (unlocked) treatment program
geared to the psychiatric needs of adolescent males. These residents
can be younger adolescents who are preparing for a successful return
to the family home or foster care or older males preparing for semi-independent
or independent living. The program also focuses on older adolescent
males who will need supportive living services upon graduation from
the program.
A significant amount of programming focuses on the development of
appropriate social skills including: job skills, completing a high
school degree,
responsible community living, and/or developing healthy relationships.
Residents in this program can go to school on grounds or on the local
school campus depending upon their needs.

- Maple Lodges – includes a 6-bed & 8-bed open (unlocked)
treatment programs designed for the needs of teenage females. Similar
to Birch Lodge, Maple Lodges focus on preparing young women for semi-independent
or independent living as well as meeting the needs of the younger adolescent
female or the older adolescent female who will likely need a significant
amount of supportive services to be successful within the community.
These girls tend to focus on relationship skills, building social skills,
successfully completing school expectations, and job skills. Residents
in these programs can go to school on grounds or on the local school
campus depending upon their needs.

Specialized Services
Each resident is assigned a master’s level licensed social worker
or psychologist who provides individual, family, and group therapy. Residents
also are treated by a Pine Rest psychiatrist who works closely with the
nurses, therapists and other team members. The C.H.O.I.C.E.S. model of
care is being developed in all aspects of programming.
Each resident participates in a variety of group therapies specific
to his or her psychiatric needs. Specialized group therapies offered
address issues of conflict resolution, grief and loss, independent living
skills, social skills, and abuse issues. Activity based therapy assists
residents in developing confidence, cooperation, teamwork, and coping
skills. At times, optional groups are offered in Dance/Movement therapy,
Physical Confidence, and other therapeutic modalities.
Spiritual care is integrated into the philosophy of the treatment model.
Residents may take part in spiritual activities, such as daily devotions,
weekly groups, and weekly religious services as they choose.
The staff-to-resident ratio allows residents to explore new coping skills.
All the programs teach, model, and promote the development of social,
coping, and living skills necessary t succeed in the community. Advancement
of the development of these skills is tested in the unlocked programs
where residents interact with the community on a daily basis. Each of
the seven programs is has a level system with daily points assigned for
socially appropriate behaviors and treatment goals.
