Workshops and Classes

Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services sponsors a variety of workshops and classes throughout the year. These workshops and classes are designed to help the non-professional learn and understand the latest skills and techniques. Workshops and classes often address common behavioral health care topics like depression, intervention, anger management, ADHD, stress management, and more. Classes are offered at various locations and Pine Rest Clinics around Grand Rapids, West Michigan, and central Iowa. Workshop or class cost and registration requirements vary. Check each listing for details.

March 4
Parenting With Love & Logic (March 4 - April 29)

"Kids don't come with an owner's manual... but I've found one, it's Love and Logic." Join us to learn how to raise respectful, responsible children! Class is for parents of children ages 6-12. This is an eight-week class from March 4 - April 29 with the week of April 8 off for spring break. Schedule is 7 - 9 p.m. on Thursdays. Presented by Krista Anderson, Ph.D. Cost is $85 per person or couple -- includes eight-week course & materials. Childcare is not provided. Location is the Pine Rest Holland Clinic, 926 W. Anger Management Classes for Adults (4 weeks)

Led by Jim Bottenhorn, MA, LLP, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Postma Center on Pine Rest's main campus, 300 68th Street, SE, Grand Rapids. Open to adults and older teens. Registration is required. Cost: $70/individual or $105/two family members. Class fee due at first class. Call 616/493-6033 for more information and to register.

Participants will learn the difference between the emotion of anger and aggression, explore the factors that influence their anger, learn to recognize anger’s warning signs, and develop new ways of responding to feelings of anger that are productive, vs. unproductive. Class participants will also learn to communicate their feelings appropriately, rather than stuffing them or blowing up.

Anger Management Class for Teens (4 weeks)

This four-week class will be led by outpatient therapist, Ryan LaRue, MSW, LMSW, ACSW, on Tuesdays from 4:15 – 5:30 p.m. at the Van Andel Center on Pine Rest’s main campus, 300 68th Street in Cutlerville. Cost: $75. To register call 616/222-4584 or e-mail ryan.larue@pinerest.org. Classes are geared toward males and females ages 12 – 17.

What to expect:
• Learn to control anger and prevent angry outbursts
• Identify the signs of anger
• Practice how to express your feelings
• Find alternative ways to express your anger
• Understand the differences between anger, aggression, assertiveness and hostility

About the Speaker: Ryan LaRue MSW, LMSW, ACSW has over 12 years of social work/counseling experience working with adolescents and children and has taught the anger management course for four years to over 350 teenagers.
