The Gerald & Jane-Ann Postma Center for Worship & Education:
Living the Mission
By: Melissa Garland and Matt Hiskes
“The building itself calls attention to our mission, and demonstrates how we offer hope and healing to a broken world,” says Rev. Bob Uken, Director of Pastoral Services, about the Postma Center for Worship & Education. Worship services will be held on Sundays for those living in the residential centers at Pine Rest. Plus, it will host the Pine Rest Chaplain meetings, and be the hub of the Prayer Support Network.
As an employee training facility, Andy George, Director of Human Resources, says, “We now have a professional facility to train and develop staff to treat an ever-changing client base. There are always new requirements for staying up-to-date with staff training.” The Postma Center also has the ability to reach other Pine Rest clinics through online streaming of training sessions.
Another way the Postma Center will fulfill the goal of “living the mission” is through its ability to create and strengthen ties to the surrounding community. Sharon Chapin, Postma Center Manager, says, “The Center will be the public face for Pine Rest. It will be a vehicle to welcome people to the campus, for a training, meeting, or other event. We want to be an educational leader in the state of Michigan for healthcare trainings. The Postma Center, as a host facility for these events, allows people to know who we are.”
"The Music of Healing" Art Show Debuts at Postma Center - Leep Art Gallery
by Melissa Garland
The opening of the Postma Center also marked the opening of the Bruce and Mary Leep Art Gallery with the show “The Music of Healing,” featuring art works by Eric Nykamp and Jim Fissel on December 10.
For Nykamp, a social worker and case manager at Pine Rest, the show is significant in communicating his passion for art and helping people. “The show is the perfect metaphor for the brand of therapy we do, dealing with brokenness and healing. It’s using the arts as a way to provide visual therapy.”
This exhibition features collages, acrylic paintings and mixed media, inspired by the concepts of music, faith, brokenness and transformation, which shaped the architecture of the Postma Center.
Inspiration for Nykamp’s art comes from his day-to-day work with clients. “It’s my job to walk people through the low points in their life,” he said. “You can’t do this too long without it either inspiring or breaking you. Many of my clients have a deep faith and understanding and know God in ways I don’t understand. I find insight from their courage and inner strength.”
Chinese culture too plays an important role in Nykamp’s work. “I have been working on Christian themes with Chinese metaphors on brokenness,” he said. “I was fascinated with fables of women who, out of the pain in their lives, created things of beauty, to come to terms with their pain. My hope is people who see this art can see God through struggles and hardship.”
The works will be on display until March 24, 2008.
Donor Wall Celebrates Employee, Community Investment
by Melissa Garland
The Gerald & Jane-Ann Postma Center for Worship & Education was built with an acknowledgement of what Pine Rest has been and a vision of what it will be. That future was entrusted to Pine Rest by more than 350 donors to date who made it possible.
“A majority of the gifts have been from employees,” said Philip Ellis, Executive Director of the Pine Rest Foundation. “Their commitment to the future of Pine Rest through their generosity is a remarkable tribute.”
As a way of recognizing the entire community that contributed to the success of the Capital Campaign, a donor wall is in place at the Postma Center. “We believe it is important that all donors be included in this recognition,” said Ron Rozema, Development Department Manager. “Because the campaign is wrapping up, we have a temporary display that replicates the permanent donor wall. Once it is in place, the wall will feature glass panels with the names of all donors to the campaign.”
Individual gifts to the campaign ranged from two dollars to several hundred thousand dollars. “Most gifts were under $1,000. The average was $250,” said Ellis. “That speaks volumes about the people who work here and their re-investment in our mission. We are grateful for every gift. We hope everyone who contributed shares a sense of their importance in this community.”

by Matt Hiskes
On January 23, Pine Rest’s Professional Lecture Series will be hosting Carolyn King, M.D. at the new Gerald & Jane-Ann Postma Center for Worship & Education. Dr. King will present, “Every Kid Who Moves Too Much Does Not Need Ritalin,” which will focus on the identification and treatment of mental health disorders in adolescents and children. The lecture is set to be the first major educational event held at the new Postma Center, which opened in December at Pine Rest’s main campus.

Dr. King will discuss the different presentations of childhood onsets of mental health disorders. She will share her perspectives about the range of different diagnoses, how to recognize the symptoms, treatment options and community support. Specific updates about movement disorders such as Tic disorders and Tourette’s disorder; agitation from anxiety; irritability and cutting caused by depression; developmental disorders such as Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism; the distractibility of ADHD and learning disorders; tantrums caused by speech disorders and sensory integration disorders; and medication side effects will be covered.
Dr. Carolyn King is a psychiatrist on Pine Rest’s inpatient child and adolescent unit, treating youngsters experiencing a wide variety of mental disorders. Dr. King graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine, and completed a general and child psychiatry residency and fellowship at the University of Michigan Health Systems.
