Medical Learner Opportunities

Our physicians, psychologists, residents, social workers, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, pharmacist, and faculty are committed to excellence and innovation in student education. Currently, we offer programs for students in the following stages of their education:


First and Second Year Pre-Clinical Studies

Medical students are introduced to psychiatry in the first and second year as a shadow experience. Acceptance is based on availability. Contact medical.education@pinerest.org for more information.


Third Year Medical Students

This is for Michigan State University College of Human Medicine students only. All rotations are scheduled through MSU College of Human Medicine and Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners (GRMEP). Visiting students are not accepted at this time.


Fourth Year Elective Rotation

All interested students must complete the Elective Psychiatry Rotation Application. Students accepted for a rotation at Pine Rest will be required to complete PHASE II of the Elective Rotation Application process. PHASE II will require a $400 application fee (application fee waived for MSU College of Human Medicine students), verification that you are a student in good standing, are covered by home medical school liability insurance, have personal health coverage, proof of immunization/immunity of the following diseases: Chicken Pox, Rubella, Mumps, Polio, Tetanus/Diphtheria, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Influenza within past 12 months, TB Skin Test within past 12 months. A criminal background check and drug screen will be conducted by Pine Rest.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Students will have active involvement on the Child & Adolescent inpatient unit. Students will be involved in admissions, attend to patient care, as well as treatment planning and management. Students will also be involved in assessment of childhood mental illness, including ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, suicidality, autistic spectrum disorders, as well as looking at psychiatric/psychological issues of children with illness and working with the children, their families and with the treatment team.

Adult Psychiatry: Addiction Medicine

Students will learn the essentials of identification, assessment, and treatment of patients with substance-use disorders with an emphasis on screening and motivational techniques. Students would also learn principles of detoxification for alcohol, opiates, and sedative-hypnotics; interpretation of drug testing results; proper prescribing practices for patient with substance use disorders. Students will participate in patient evaluation, creation of treatment plans and will accompany patients to the Intensive Outpatient Program 3 days a week.

Adult Psychiatry

Students will have active involvement on an inpatient psychiatry unit as a functioning member of the treatment team. Students will conduct initial and follow-up evaluations of psychiatric inpatients, work with different members of the treatment team including nurses, social workers, pharmacists, and chaplains, lead treatment team discussions of diagnosis and treatment and acquire additional skills in utilization of psycho-tropic medications and psychotherapy. This elective will expand the introductory psychiatric experience and will provide students with the opportunity to participate in the in-depth care of acutely ill psychiatric patients.

Geriatric Psychiatry

Students will have active involvement on the older adult inpatient unit at Pine Rest. The student will be assisting with admissions, developing a differential diagnosis and Psycho-Social-Spiritual treatment approach, daily rounds and discharge planning, with oversight from the attending psychiatrist. The student will have the opportunity to observe Probate Court proceedings, participate in family meetings and multidisciplinary treatment team meetings. There will also be opportunities to observe testing for Dementia including Cognitive Performance and Neuropsychological evaluations. Students will be exposed to different psychiatric diseases seen in this patient population including Depression, Anxiety, Dementia, and Schizophrenia and will develop an understanding about the unique pharmacologic strategies for treating these conditions. Students will also have an opportunity to observe both Transcranial Magnetic Therapy and Electroconvulsive Therapy.


Physician Assistant Student Rotations

All interested students must complete a Visiting Physician Assistant Rotation Application. Students accepted for a rotation at Pine Rest will be required to complete PHASE II of the Visiting Physician Assistant Rotation Application process. PHASE II will require a $250 application fee (application fee waived for GVSU students), verification that you are a student in good standing, are covered by home school liability insurance, have personal health coverage, proof of immunization/immunity of the following diseases: Chicken Pox, Rubella, Mumps, Polio, Tetanus/Diphtheria, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Influenza within past 12 months, TB Skin Test within past 12 months. A criminal background check and drug screen will be conducted by Pine Rest.


Nurse Practitioner Students

All interested students must complete a Visiting Nurse Practitioner Rotation Application. Students accepted for a rotation at Pine Rest will be required to complete PHASE II of the Visiting Nurse Practitioner Application process. PHASE II will require a $250 application fee, verification that you are a student in good standing, are covered by home school liability insurance, have personal health coverage, proof of immunization/immunity of the following diseases: Chicken Pox, Rubella, Mumps, Polio, Tetanus/Diphtheria, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Influenza within past 12 months, TB Skin Test within past 12 months. A criminal background check and drug screen will be conducted by Pine Rest.


Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Students

All interested students must complete the Visiting PharmD Rotation Application. Students accepted for a rotation at Pine Rest will be required to complete PHASE II of the Visiting PharmD Rotation Application process. PHASE II will require a $300 application fee, verification that you are a student in good standing, are covered by home school liability insurance, have personal health coverage, proof of immunization/immunity of the following diseases: Chicken Pox, Rubella, Mumps, Polio, Tetanus/Diphtheria, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Influenza within past 12 months, TB Skin Test within past 12 months. A criminal background check and drug screen will be conducted by Pine Rest.


Visiting Resident Rotation

Visiting Resident rotations are typically scheduled on a 4 week basis. Pine Rest offers the following visiting resident rotations:

  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Adult Psychiatry: Addiction Medicine
  • Adult Psychiatry
  • Geriatric Psychiatry
