Postma Center

OVERVIEW
Pine Rest’s new Gerald & Jane-Ann Postma Center for Worship & Education is designed as a conference center, place of worship and educational training facility for the community. In keeping with the organization’s rich history of professional training, many nursing, psychology, medical, pastoral, social work and other students have earned degrees through specialized educational programs at Pine Rest for over 50 years. The Postma Center will assist future students, staff and community mental health practitioners with ongoing training and pastoral needs. We view it as an extension of our mission, dedicated toward delivery of behavioral healthcare services with professional excellence, integrity and compassion.

CAMPUS CENTERPIECE
The Postma Center is a centerpiece complementing Pine Rest’s beautiful, 220-acre main campus in Cutlerville, Michigan. It is located at 300 68th Street, SE, Grand Rapids.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Guests attending events at the 15,500 square foot Postma Center enter the facility to find the following special features:

  • Entry vestibule
  • Lobby
  • Pre-function space
  • Coat room
  • Two sets of restrooms
  • Multi-purpose conference room
  • Business Center
  • Catering kitchen
  • Office
  • History and Donor Walls and a spacious Art Gallery complement the special features.
  • The main space will have an undulating ceiling which compresses the room upon entry and then rises as it approaches the main speaking point of the facility
  • Sophisticated audio/video equipment
  • The Business Center has standup counters with stools. There is power and data connections for laptops, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and cell phones. This Center is intended to be a touchdown space for persons to use before, during breaks and after meetings

A LEED BUILDING
The design and construction of Pine Rest’s Postma Center follows specific requirements as described by the U.S. Green Building Council as we prepare for securing a LEED Certification.

CONFIGURATION OF CONFERNCE SPACE
The Center provides multiple ways of configuring space to accommodate different seating requirements.

  • There is an overall Main Auditorium, which, when fully open can seat 250 tables and 500 individuals.
  • This auditorium space also can be further divided into one large Conference Room, plus 3 small Conference Rooms, each seating 30 to 35 persons in a training configuration.

ARCHITECTURAL STYLING
Of special interest on the outside of the building is the architectural styling and use of exterior materials, which include pre-patina copper panels, brick, painted metal panels, wood and stained glass. The stained glass is a modern attempt to connect to the original Pine Rest Chapel on campus in 1929 and to allow the color of light to add to the worship experience. A variation, up and down, of the vertical placement of the stained glass windows on the facility that inspires the arrangement of musical notes one views upon singing from a hymnal or music sheet.

  • General contractor for the Postma Center is Pioneer Construction.
  • Integrated Architecture provides for architectural plans and drawings.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT
Creation of the Postma Center is possible thanks to gift support. For many years, key donors and staff members envisioned a center that would host training for mental health professionals, clergy, and the broader community. Practical considerations and stewardship of resources suggested a facility that would address multiple uses including educational presentations, seminars, smaller conferences, worship, and other gatherings.

A small group of friends initially caught the vision. Their generosity and encouragement provided the impetus to move the Postma Center toward reality. Now the opportunity for community investment in this local treasure is open to all interested parties.

Pine Rest invites gift support that will carry the creation of the Postma Center to completion. Gifts at all levels are welcome.

For confidential discussion of gift opportunities, please contact the Development Department at (616) 455-8680.
