Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services Muskegon Clinic will be presenting a 6-week class on “Parenting: From Survival to Success” on Tuesdays, October 12 – November 16, 2010.
The class will be held from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the clinic in the Mercy Health Pavilion, 1150 E. Sherman Blvd., Muskegon. It will be facilitated by Brett VanTol, Ph.D. and William J. Rowell, Ph.D., ABPP, both licensed psychologists. Classes are for parents of children six to 16 years who want to learn how to raise respectful, responsible children. Cost is $15 per person/per session or $25 per couple/per session. In addition, there will be the cost of the “Transforming the Difficult Child” workbook by Howard Glasser, Joann Bowdidge and Lisa Bravo of $18.
Parenting is the most difficult, but potentially most rewarding challenge a person can take on. Often the ways of parenting we adopt from our own experiences may not prepare us to be the kind of parent we wish to be. The truth is, until recently, parents and professionals alike had not figured out the most effective way to help our children be all that they can be.
Based on his work with difficult children, Howard Glasser, himself an admitted difficult child, figured out what was missing and how we could bring out the best in all children. Emphasizing the successes every child has and minimizing the energy we give to their mistakes allows parents and others, to transform the child and his picture of who he is. Parents also find this approach transforms them from negative, rule setting, demanding, frustrated authority figures to generous, supportive, positive parents.
