Pine Rest begins its second
phase of inpatient unit construction. Phase two will create a continuum of
services for seniors that incorporate an older adult inpatient unit along with outpatient
services such as assessment, diagnosis and treatment for the often complicated
cognitive and behavioral health concerns faced by seniors.
The Pine Rest Van Andel •
Cook Center for Dementia and Geriatric Behavioral Health is made possible by
the generosity of the 349 capital campaign donors who contributed more than
$3.2 million towards project costs of $4,062,790. It is named in honor of the
lead donors to the project: the Foundation
of Jay and Betty Van Andel and a personal gift from Peter and Pat Cook.
Phase two is extensive: new
construction of 10,092 sq. ft. and renovation of existing 11,182 sq. ft.; when
completed the unit will increase its bed capacity from 20 to 26 patient beds. Construction
of the Van Andel • Cook Center is expected to be completed in June 2013.
Phase one, the addition of a
new 22-bed unit to the Van Andel Center, began earlier this year and was
completed in September. This “domino” expansion plan allowed Pine Rest to move
the existing older adult inpatient unit to the new wing so that construction of
the Van Andel • Cook Center could begin. Once this project is completed, Pine
Rest will begin the third and final phase of its 2-year expansion plan which is
the Mulder West inpatient unit.
This provided a strategic
opportunity to expand the Pine Rest inpatient hospitalization facilities
without taking any patient beds off-line or displacing current staff in the
process.
Once construction of phases
two and three are completed, the Van Andel Center unit will open to patients in
January 2014. It will be dedicated to the treatment and care of patients with
co-occurring disorders, making it one of only a couple of specialty treatment
units in the country. Pine Rest has seen an increase in the incidence of
co-occurring, substance abuse and mental illness, disorders in our current
patients across our adult units.
