Beginning July 2, Pine Rest will exhibit “Artworks on the Road Toward Mastery” by Michelle Curry. The exhibit will be in the Postma Center Leep Art Gallery at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services main campus in Cutlerville, Mich.

Curry has created works of art in various mediums, using oil, acrylic, watercolor, colored pencil, pastel, graphite and digital media. She has done still life, landscape, and portraiture as well as lyrical pieces that "tell a story." Her rich and varied life experiences create a fertile creativity from which to communicate visually. Curry is a Southwest Michigan artist.

“My goal is always to strive for the highest in excellence and to achieve mastery. With that comes an increase in the spiritual disciplines of self control, patience, finishing well, and seeing a piece through to its highest level of expression. My work does not involve comparison with others, but rather a measurement is set against the created natural world and highest standards of artistic principles,” says Curry.

“I enjoy being a creator of unique things of beauty that never existed before. I like the idea of being self employed, working at an age-old craft that brings honor through hard work and ingenuity.”

Curry was born partially deaf and was trained early in lip-reading. She feels that her sensitivity to visual details is in part due to her disability, which goes with the "seeing" aspect of creating art. Curry has earned two degrees, one in graphic design/business and the other in illustration.

The exhibit at the Pine Rest Postma Center, 300 68th Street, SE, Grand Rapids, will run July 2 to October 6, 2014. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and additional times are available by appointment. Admission is free of charge. For more information, please call 616/222-4530.
